The British military’s Pattern 1908 webbing was meant to replace the earlier Pattern 1888 leather load bearing gear used during the late 1800’s, particularly in light of P1888’s shortcomings during the Second Boer War (1899 – 1902) [1][2]. P08 webbing became the first cotton webbing adopted by any European military [2], which were mostly using webbing equipment made from leather at the turn of the 20th Century, and continued to do so through WW2, for example France’s Mle 1935 webbing, and sometimes even afterwards [3]. While Pattern 08 webbing is mostly associated with WW1, items were used throughout WW2 when its replacement, P37, was not available, particularly in second-line and reserve units [2].
