White rectangles on the back of the hat are for enhanced visibility in the dark, like the white rectangle on the first two smocks on the Pattern 59 Denison smock page. They are made from plastic material and arranged to indicate the Second Ranger Battalion’s Headquarters Company [1]. Cat’s eye arrangements are reproduced from [1] below:
