MBSS stands for “Maritime Ballistic Survival System” [1]. The MBSS plate carrier has trapezoidal plate bags meant to hold foam floatation inserts for maritime operations as well as SAPI ballistic plates. It was issued as part of a set which also includes pouches and a Modular Assault Pack (MAP) for the back which is available as a separate pack that can be attached to the MOLLE webbing or sewn to an entire back platebag. The MBSS has been produced in green and tan colors. [1][2]

Battle of Al-Faw (March 20 – 24, 2003) [6]:

The Battle of Al-Faw was one of the first battles of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The Coaltion’s primary objective was to secure the oil and gas infrastructure on the Al-Faw Peninsula, especially the offshore gas and oil platforms (GOPLATs). This was considered critical to prevent Iraqi forces from deliberately releasing oil into the Persian Gulf and causing environmental damage, as had occurred during the Gulf War in 1991.
The operation involved a coalition of forces, including US Navy SEAL Teams 3, 8, 10, and Special Boat Team 22 [6], British Royal Marine Commandos [6], and Polish GROM [4], supported by air and naval units. Naval Special Warfare forces played a central role in the initial assault, conducting a surprise attack on the GOPLATs that successfully secured the facilities with minimal damage. [7]
