The 1902 Pattern Canteens were largely the same as the preceding 1878 Pattern Canteens used during the late 19th Century Spanish American and Indian Wars except for a depression on the back side for the wearer’s body. These canteens were issued, mainly to state National Guard units, until the start of WW1. Most of these canteens were made by Rock Island Arsenal (RIA). [1]
