XM28E4 gas masks were meant to be lightweight and packable, an advantage over the larger, bulkier M17 gas mask in service at the time, though they were only protective against riot control agents like tear gas. Initially tested by the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division and 1st Cavalry Division, they were accepted for mass produced starting in 1968. XM28E4 masks were issued to some pilots, tunnel rats, and MAC V SOG personnel during the Vietnam War. These gas masks were often called “grasshopper” masks due to the angular, elongated shape and large eye lenses, making the wearer look like a grasshopper [1][2].

After the war, many of these masks were surplused to municipal police departments for riot control use inside the US [1].

Mask:

Lens is made from clear Perspex material that is very brittle. The body of the mask is made from flexible silicone.
